Acurast is a decentralised compute network launched in 2022 from Zug, Switzerland that uses idle smartphones as cloud compute nodes — deploying Trusted Execution Environments on mobile devices to provide verifiable, confidential computation without centralised cloud providers. The CoinList token sale has been completed. The $ACU token exists. The co-founders have not been verified by VaaSBlock’s attribution standards. The VBTS of 9.2 at the 50th percentile and MES of 7 at the 11th percentile (trust None) reflect median-to-below positioning. No MES data was available.
The most interesting… thing about Acurast is not the compute marketplace — it is the cornered resource claim. There are approximately seven billion smartphones in the world. The majority of their computational capacity is idle at any given moment. If you could reliably, securely, and profitably harness even one percent of that idle capacity for useful computation, you would have a compute network vastly larger than AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud combined, at a fraction of the capital cost. This is not an incremental improvement over existing cloud infrastructure — it is a fundamentally different approach to who owns and operates computation infrastructure.
The “if you could” is doing substantial work in that sentence. Deploying computation on untrusted consumer devices — devices that belong to private individuals, run arbitrary apps, have variable network connectivity, and may be physically destroyed or factory-reset at any moment — is an engineering challenge of genuine difficulty. The TEE implementation on mobile devices must provide verifiable computation guarantees despite the hostile hardware environment. The incentive structure for phone owners must make participation economically rational despite the battery drain and wear costs. The developer experience for workloads that depend on mobile-distributed compute must be reliable enough for production use. Acurast is attempting to solve all of these simultaneously. The DePIN compute context is examined in our analysis of decentralised physical infrastructure. Acurast is Unverified under VaaSBlock’s RMA framework. Read More
