Roam is a decentralized wireless network platform developed by MetaBlox Labs, aiming to revolutionize global connectivity through a combination of Web3 technologies, including Decentralized Physical I…nfrastructure Networks (DePIN), eSIM services, and blockchain integration. Launched in 2021, Roam seeks to unify over 7.5 million WiFi hotspots worldwide, providing users with seamless, secure, and decentralized internet access.
The core of Roam’s infrastructure is built upon the OpenRoaming protocol, allowing users to connect automatically to participating WiFi networks without the need for repetitive logins. This is achieved through the use of Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and Verifiable Credentials (VCs), ensuring secure and passwordless authentication. By leveraging these technologies, Roam enhances user privacy and simplifies the process of accessing WiFi networks globally.
Roam’s ecosystem is powered by its native utility token, $ROAM, and a reward system known as Roam Points. Users can earn Roam Points by engaging in various activities within the Roam app, such as connecting to WiFi hotspots, adding new hotspots to the network, referring friends, and participating in in-app events. These points can be converted into $ROAM tokens, which serve multiple functions, including staking, accessing premium services, and participating in governance decisions.
To support and expand its network, Roam offers hardware solutions like the Roam Rainier MAX60 and Roam Baker MAX30. These devices act as WiFi miners, enabling users to contribute to the network’s infrastructure while earning rewards. By deploying these devices, users help increase the coverage and reliability of the Roam network, fostering a community-driven approach to global connectivity.
In 2024, Roam underwent a significant transition by migrating its operations to the Solana blockchain. This move was driven by the need for higher scalability, faster transaction speeds, and lower fees, all of which are essential for supporting Roam’s growing user base and expanding network. The migration also facilitated the integration of Roam’s Proof-of-Location protocol, enabling secure and verifiable location data for various applications within the Web3 ecosystem.
Roam’s commitment to decentralization and user empowerment is further exemplified by its partnerships and community initiatives. The platform has collaborated with organizations like the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), becoming the only Web3 company recognized as a Certified Access Network Provider for OpenRoaming. Additionally, Roam has engaged in partnerships with companies such as APhone and Coral App to enhance its service offerings and reach a broader audience.
As of mid-2025, Roam boasts over 560,000 app users across more than 180 countries, with a network comprising over 3.5 million OpenRoaming hotspots and 440,000 self-built nodes. The platform continues to grow, driven by its innovative approach to decentralized connectivity, user-centric design, and robust incentive structures. Read More
